San Diego Chargers: Franchise Overview

The Chargers began up the road in Los Angeles as one of the original AFL clubs in 1960. The franchise moved to San Diego in the following year. In ten AFL seasons, the Chargers had only one losing year. Behind a wide open offensive attack, the club made five playoff appearances from 1960-65.

When the AFL merged into the NFL in 1970, San Diego failed to produce a winning season from 1970-77.  However, head coach Don Coryell was able to turn things around. He led the franchise to four consecutive postseason trips from 1979-82.

In the mid-nineties, San Diego reached the playoffs three times in a four-year span.

Recently, the Chargers have been able to qualify for the postseason more often than not. Since 2004, San Diego has been to the playoffs five times.

Wide receiver Lance Alworth, offensive lineman Ron Mix, quarterback Dan Fouts and tight end Kellen Winslow are among the Hall of Famers that have starred for the Chargers.  

Championship Seasons

San Diego's only AFL title was in 1963. In the championship game, the Chargers dominated the Boston Patriots by a final of 51-10.  

In the Super Bowl era, San Diego has captured just a single AFC crown. In 1994, the Chargers were a sizable underdog heading into the AFC Championship Game at Pittsburgh against the Steelers. A late defensive stand enabled San Diego to reach the Super Bowl for the first time. However, the Chargers were no match for the San Francisco 49ers in a 49-26 Super Bowl defeat.

Home Stadium

The San Diego Chargers have played at Qualcomm Stadium (capacity of 71,294) since 1967. Three Super Bowls have been hosted by the stadium. In a comfortable climate, San Diego Chargers tickets provide plenty of action.
