How to Start a Traffic School

Have you ever been to a traffic violator school class and said to yourself, 'I could teach this class better' or thought maybe it would be a good side business to bring in additional revenue. Opening up a traffic school business may be a good choice but remember your going to be following DMV & court rules and there are many requirements that the state has put in place that must be met before you can open your doors, which I will go into in more depth in the next paragraph.

One of the most important things you will need is to have the court approve your school name. All court lists come out at different times during the year so it is very important that you plan your time according to when that list comes out since it will be the main way you will acquire students. Alot of courts work with a liaison to oversee the traffic schools and make sure the program is run properly, so you will find out what company is running that in the court jurisdiction you want to offer.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the DMV can take up to 120 days to do a background check on you to see if you qualify to be an owner operator or instructor. My experience with this is to give yourself time to get everything approved because your dealing with the state and the courts, I can't stress this enough.

You will also need to go to the DMV website and read the traffic school program handbook. The 'program' handbook is specifically for traffic schools, it covers all the rules and regulations as well as the qualifications needed for the owner operator and instructor.

After you go through the program handbook you will want to make sure you have the necessary qualifications before you go any further. In my opinion the program handbook is the best tool you can have for knowing all things Traffic School.

A few of the DMV requirements are: being fingerprinted by live scan, File a surety bond for $ 2,000.00, submit an insurance certificate, buy a DMV approved 8 hour traffic school lesson plan, rent an office space in which to run your business out of and hold your traffic violator classes. Have your classroom approved by an inspector from the DMV. If you are going to hire any additional office help or Traffic school instructors you must provide workman's comp insurance. So there will be money going out before it comes in.

A 'TIP' to save yourself some money. If you are not going to be holding classes everyday then your best bet would be to start out renting an executive suite. All you will need is about 100 sq ft of space that you can use for your office. You can hang your licenses and keep your student records in your file cabinet.

Some offices suites have a common area with a meeting room to hold your classes. When you grow you can find a space in a local community center or other space you can rent out for the day or evening to keep costs down. When I started out I only had 8 students in my first class, so I used the small meeting room in my building where I set up a chalkboard and a tv-dvd player and I was all set.

A traffic school only consists of an owner or owners, An operator who oversees the day to day operation of the school, And the traffic school instructor who will teach the classes. The owner does not have to take a DMV test, but the operator and instructor do. The written exam will consist of traffic laws, Safe driving practices, Knowledge of teaching methods and techniques. The operator will also have additional test questions on statutes and regulations, office procedures and record keeping.

Most People don't realize that to be the operator of a traffic school you need to have worked for an established licensed California traffic school as an instructor for a period of not less than 500 hours of actual in class instruction. If you have this requirement then great, if you do not you will need to either hire an instructor who has their 500 hours or hire an operator. During the time you have someone else as your operator you can be working toward the hours you need so you can take over that position and save yourself some money.

If you do not know of anyone who can be your operator, you can put an ad on a website job board. I have spoken to a lot of schools who had to go this route but had success, there are alot of instructors right now who would appreciate teaching extra classes that have taught the required 500 hours needed to become your operator.

These are just some of the requirements that I have listed above, read through the program handbook before you spend any money! Make sure this business is the right fit for you.
