The county has many historical venues and sights of interest for tourists. The area includes some notable towns and boroughs such as Windsor, Newbury Reading and Slough.
A visit to Windsor isn't complete without a visit to the 1000 year old Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and official residence of Her Majesty The Queen. Set in 13 acres, with some unique attractions including the beautifully maintained state rooms, The Drawing Gallery and St Georges Chapel, which was commissioned by Edward IV in 1475 and took 50 years to build. It is architecturally exquisite with ten monarchs buried in the premises including Henry VIII and one of his wives Jane Seymour and Edward IV. View the changing of the guards ceremony as they march up the High street into the castle.
Eton College is one of the most famous colleges in the world, educating boys between the ages of 13 and 18 including nineteen British Prime Ministers. Founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, it is a high achieving and fascinating school where the pupils still wear uniform in the style of 1850's. Use a car rental in Windsor to explore the 18th Century Lake and landscaped gardens of Frogmore House, which includes decorative panels by Princess Elizabeth a gifted artist, who painted whilst she was in residence, as well as artwork by Queen Victoria. During the 18th century, the town benefited from the London to Bath summer getaway as it is situated half way between the two, it was the ideal stopping point during the two day journey. Modern day Newbury is home to Hi Tech communication companies like Vodafone.
