There are some severe consequences you can face if you receive several traffic tickets for moving or non-moving violations in a short amount of time. The DMV point system is designed so that drivers can be forgiven for past mistakes if enough time passes without them committing any more errors on the road. But drivers who repeatedly and rapidly demonstrate irresponsible actions will be seen as too hazardous to remain on the road. Too many traffic violations in succession can get your license suspended and raise your insurance premiums significantly.
Driving Record Point Expiration
Driver demerit points are set to expire after a certain period of time, usually around 3 years. Any points incurred in the distant past will not carry over past their expiration. License suspensions are usually based on receiving a certain number of points within a certain time period. For example, in some states 12 points in 12 months, 18 points in 18 months, or 24 points in 36 months would all be grounds for suspension. However, if it has been more than 36 months, those old points won’t count anymore, and you can start anew with a fresh driving record.
Habitual Traffic Offenders
If a driver commits traffic violations frequently, or many violations of a particularly severe nature, they may be labeled as a Habitual Traffic Offender (HTO). HTOs will face long-term suspensions of their driving privileges. Continuing to drive on a suspended license can even result in a permanent license revocation. Some states, like Florida, offer hardship or restricted licenses to drivers who are under suspension. A hardship license will grant restricted privileges to drivers, such as only driving to and from work, school, religious services, or hospitals.
Taking Traffic School to Dismiss a Ticket
Taking Traffic School Online is usually the easiest way to prevent a lot of points and fines from appearing on your record. However, there are limits on how often traffic school can be taken. In most states, the limit is once every 12 months. If you commit a violation less than 12 months after your last one, you won’t be eligible to take traffic school for it. In other states, the limit is higher – for instance, California’s limit is once every 18 months. The purpose of these limitations is to prevent habitual offenders from taking advantage of the system and refusing to change their dangerous habits. Because of these restrictions, it’s a good idea to take Traffic School for the first ticket you receive.
Remember, driving is a privilege. If you find yourself constantly breaking the law behind the wheel, it is time to reconsider your capacity to drive safely. Online Traffic School is a great way to be reminded of the principles of responsible driving and lessen your chances of getting in an accident. It’s not just your own life at risk out there, so drive safely.
