With all the veterinary offices available around the country, many people do not realize that there are only twenty eight veterinary schools in the United States producing all of these veterinarians. Surprisingly few institutions offer schooling to provide a service that is very much in demand for a society that badly needs it for livestock, working animals, and beloved pets. Here is the current national breakdown:

Of particular interest is the large concentration (almost 40%) in the midwest. That makes sense in the idea that most of the country's livestock is located in this region of the country. However, less than 40% of veterinarians spend much of their careers working with farm animals.
In addition to these fine institutions, there is also a growing popularity in international schools for veterinary medicine. These schools often operate on a similar curriculum to their American counterparts, but offer the education for a fraction of the price. While the United State has strict standards for approving degrees from foreign medical schools, the country is much more lax when it comes to veterinary institutions allowing the for graduates from these institutions to practice their trade in the United States.
Some international veterinary institution options:
American University of Antigua College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences - http://www.auamed.org/vetschool (located in the Caribbean)
Royal Veterinary College, University of London - http://www.rvc.ac.uk/ (located in the United Kingdom)
School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Glasgow - http://www.gla.ac.uk/faculties/vet/ (located in the United Kingdom)
